If X-Men Origins: Wolverine is Your Next DVD Movie Rental, Read On |

I've always been a big fan of the X-Men film series. With the exception of The Watchmen and the last couple of Batman films, the X-films have been some of the best superhero films to make it into the DVD movie rental market. I was really excited that the new Wolverine solo film had made it into the DVD movie rental lists and eagerly rented it as soon as it was available. However, about a quarter of the way into the film I found myself regretting making this DVD movie rental. While Hugh Jackman was a good as ever in his signature role, and Liev Schrieber was exceptional as his brother, the rest of the film is formulaic, corny and predictable. It's not nearly as good as any of the X-Men films in terms of script or direction. It's got all of the flash and dazzle you'll expect from a superhero DVD movie rental, but it just doesn't deliver in terms of excitement, believability, or exploring enough about the main character's personality. Frankly, the opening montage showing Wolverine and his brother fighting their way through World Wars I and II and the Vietnam War are far more exciting than the rest of the film combined. To top it off, there's a disappointing CGI version of Professor X at the end of the film that's really second-rate. I don't understand why they didn't just hire Patrick Stewart for a day, plop him in front of a green screen and let him collect a day's pay. I can't recommend this DVD movie rental except for Liev Schreiber's above average turn as the villainous Sabertooth. |
